The Mega Drive/Genesis Mini is Near Perfection

Updated: Jan 10, 2023

As many of you know, were here are Night at the Arcades are big fans of the video game company SEGA. As well, many of us are excited for the upcoming SEGA Genesis Mini that will release on September 19th, 2019. That said, SEGA recently announced another 10 games for the Genesis Mini, as well as an update on the Genesis USB controllers created by RetroBit,

First off, the Genesis USB controllers by RetroBit will be compatible with the Genesis Mini. While the Genesis Mini will comes with 2 wired 3-Button Genesis controllers, there are certain games where a 6-Button Genesis controllers is recommended. With that said, RetroBit will be selling the 6-Button Genesis controllers at $14.99 per controller. The USB controllers are compatible with computers, Steam, Nintendo Switch, and the upcoming SEGA Genesis Mini. The controllers are currently for sale across different distributors, but we will leave a link for the Amazon page where you can purchase a 6-Button Genesis controllers.

However, SEGA also recently announced the next 10 games coming to the Genesis Mini. Currently, 30 out of the 40 games have been announced, and the 10 games announced today are as follows.

  • Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle

  • Beyond Oasis

  • Ghouls 'n Ghosts

  • Golden Axe

  • Mega Man: The Wily Wars

  • Phantasy Star 4: The End of the Millenium

  • Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball

  • Street Fighter 2: Special Champion Edition

  • Vectorman

  • Wonder Boy in Monster World

Possibly the most surprising game from this announcement is Mega Man: The Wily Wars, which is a game that was never released physically. Mega Man: The Wily Wars was only available through the SEGA Channel, which was SEGA's Online Game Service back near the tail end of the SEGA Genesis. However, once the service was discontinued, so was the game. Over the years, ROMs of Mega Man: The Wily Wars was found, and reproduction copies have been made for people to be able to play the game. However, now with the help of Capcom, Mega Man: The Wily Wars is receiving an official rerelease with the SEGA Genesis Mini. While Mega Man: The Wily Wars does have some slowdown issues, and is in someway inferior to Mega Man 1, 2, and 3 on the NES, it is still the first three Mega Man games on SEGA Genesis, and they are playable. Maybe in 2019, it is not all that special, but for 1994, and especially for SEGA fans, it's definitely a special treat.

Many of the other titles such as Beyond Oasis and Phantasy Star 4: The End of the Millenium, games that many people may not have played, are fantastic titles that will bring people in. As well as titles such as Street Fighter 2: Special Champion Edition and Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball, classics that many people have fond memories of. It is safe to say that, while there may be a handful of titles missing, SEGA is putting in a lot of effort to make the Genesis Mini as great as it can be.
