Mega Drive/Genesis Mini Announced its Last... 12 Games?

The Genesis Mini finally announced, not its last 10 games, but its last 12 games! SEGA has thrown everyone for a loop by bringing the final number of games to 42 for the SEGA Genesis Mini. The following titles were the 12 that were announced earlier today

  • Alisia Dragoon

  • Columns

  • Darius

  • Dynamite Headdy

  • Eternal Champions

  • Kid Chameleon

  • Light Crusader

  • Monster World IV

  • Road Rash II

  • Strider

  • Tetris

  • Virtua Fighter 2

There are a few big surprise and special hits from the titles announced today. Alisia Dragoon was a side-scroller created by Game Arts, the very same studio who would go on to create the Grandia and Lunar Series. As well, the animation work was done by Studio Gainax, famed for Japanese animation such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and FLCL. Definitely a cult hit that will please many fans.

Strider is a Capcom classic that fans will be quick to pick-up and play. The NES version of Strider was decent, but the Genesis version of Strider is near arcade perfect to the 1989 arcade version of Strider. Road Rash II is also a classic old-school bike race where players can attack their opponents with bats and chains. Road Rash used to be one of Electronic Arts most popular franchises in the 90s, and it is great to see it return for the SEGA Genesis Mini.

Virtua Fighter 2 was a fantastic 3D-Fighting Game on the SEGA Saturn, but in 1997, SEGA decided to release Virtua Fighter 2 as a 2D-Fighting Game on the SEGA Saturn. With only 8 playable characters, the roster is small, and it is not the same game that Virtua Fighter is known for, but it is a quirky title that will interest fans; there was in fact a Virtua Fighter 2 on the SEGA Genesis.

The real surprises are Darius and Tetris, two games that were never released on the SEGA Genesis. Darius II, the sequel to Darius, was released on the SEGA Genesis in September of 1989, but the original arcade game Darius never released on SEGA Genesis. Tetris for SEGA Genesis was created, and it has been reported that around 10 to 15 copies exist, but in terms of a wide release, Tetris was never in stores for consumers to purchase. There are ROMs online, but the SEGA Genesis Mini will be the first commercial release for Tetris.

SEGA also announced specials add-ons for the SEGA Genesis Mini. While only offering cosmetic appeal, and offering nothing in terms of added content, SEGA announced a SEGA-CD Mini and a SEGA 32X Mini that can be attached to the SEGA Genesis Mini, as a form of fun comedy. Not required to enjoy the SEGA Genesis Mini, but something collectors and fans can purchase for fun. SEGA also announced a Sonic 3 and Knuckles Mini Cartridges that can either sit on top of the 32X, or in the SEGA Genesis Mini. The SEGA-CD, SEGA 32X, and Sonic 3 and Knuckles Cartridges will come in a pack called the Mega Drive Tower, which will retail at 3980 yen; there is currently no US Release planned.

There will always be a handful of games that did not make the console that fans will always want, but at 42 games, that should be plenty for fans to enjoy. The following is all the titles announced for the Mega Drive/Genesis Mini:

  • Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
