Look, not every game needs to have hundreds of millions dollars behind it to be special. Sometimes, a game just needs to be fun, enjoyable, and memorable. Donut County is all of those things, and in part why it is so fun! There is not a lot to talk about, it is a very simple game. You play a raccoon who opens an app, and with this app, is able to control a hole that sucks the world from above. It's quirky, fun, and the comedy really holds the game together.
The game is colorful and bright, has a very smooth and relaxing soundtrack, and because the hole grows slightly bigger, becomes somewhat addicting. The game also has some puzzle mechanics as it is not only about getting the hole bigger. Sometimes it involves lighting things on fire or creating an explosion in the back yard.
There is not a lot of story, but the characters are very much. It is written in a comic book style of writing, and the game makes it obvious that none of this is meant to be taken seriously. Therefore, the writers are able to stretch the comedy, and while it is very dry comedy, the ubiquitous of it all will be funny to some.
At the end of the day, Donut County is a small bite game that fills the player up a lot. It's fun for the few hours it takes to finish the game, but it does not ask for more. It does not ask the player to think existentially, all it asks is for a little bit of fun. It is hard to review games with different scales, but in terms of quality and enjoyment, Donut county hits the ball hard. Donut County is available on MacOS, Microsoft Windows, and Playstation 4, with a Nintendo Switch Version coming soon.
